The colombian national federation of coffee growers did a smart thing when they created juan valdez and his donkey conchita in 1958. Prior to that, most people were unaware that Colombia grew and exported coffee-- which it has done since the late 1700s. Thanks to the federation, Colombia is now one of the largest exporters of raw coffee, producing 11.5 million bags per year... and, americans love it!
