the 2001 vintage in the napa valley was one in which the red varietals were able to reach near perfect ripeness & maturity as a result of beautiful fall weather. after fermenting to dryness, we allowed extended maceration for 3-4 weeks to enable the extraction of the full tannins available with this vintage. a robust & full- bodied wine with black fruit characteristics, it also show balance & finesse.

93% cabernet sauvignon, 4% merlot, & 3% cabernet franc. the vintage began with the lowest rainfall in five years. our vines regulated their crop levels reducing bud count at bud break by 20%, spring remained dry & cool in may, they removed crop from weaker vines. the hottest summer in five years prompted them again to reduce crop load. we removed green or pink colored fruit at veraison to even phenolic levels & equal maturity with yields of 1.5 tons per acre or less. they extended the growing season & harvested in early october, 3 weeks later than normal. the fruit was hand picked & hand sorted, then fermentation for two weeks to intensify the extraction of ripe grape tannins. to soften & integrate the complex characteristics, the wine was bottle aged for 10 months prior to release.
