A hearty tomato and meat sauce. Meatballs and Italian sausage are simmered in the sauce for hours, during which time the meat dissipates in the sauce leaving it with a rich, meaty flavor. This sauce does not have readily visible chunks of meat in it as most Americans are accustomed to seeing.
